For those of you who celebrate Easter, you may know that it can really vary from country to country. Here in Ireland, people often associate the word ‘Easter’ not just with the Catholic celebration, but also with the Easter Rising of 1916, in which members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) rose up against British occupation in Ireland and proclaimed an Irish Republic.
Fast forward almost 100 years and you will find some different traditions such as those listed below.
Good Friday
On this day people traditionally fasted here in Ireland, and it is also prohibited to sell alcohol here. Many parishes across the country have ‘Stations of the Cross’ processions, which depict Christ carrying the cross.
Easter Sunday
For many this is the most eagerly awaited day of the Easter season. Many people give up different things for Lent, usually sweet things such as chocolate and biscuits and this is the day when they can finally break it.
Easter Sunday is very much a family day with families all around the country gathering for lunch or dinner and also to tuck into some yummy Easter eggs.
